Flight to Moscow

Moscow, majesty and mystery

Travel to a city steeped in history by booking a ticket to Moscow.

The essential

The stuff of legend

Moscow thrills visitors with its artistry and magnificence. Sumptuous monuments to the wealth of bygone tsars, fabulous museums and iconic landmarks evoking the Soviet era bear witness to the rich diversity of Russia's artistic and cultural heritage. But Moscow has also exploded into an edgy, vibrant and creative modern city. After booking your ticket to Moscow, Red Square has to be your first stop, its name derives from the word "krasnyj", which meant "beautiful" in Old Russian. At the very heart of Moscow, it is the place where most of the city's (and the country's) history unfolded.  It is surrounded by iconic sites such as the Kremlin, seat of political power and itself a complex of architectural marvels including the Saviour Gate Tower.

Between traditions and creativity
Moscow, where history is written emphatically
From the Middle Ages to the Soviet era via the constructivist movement, history has left the Russian capital with diverse but still impressive legacies. Thanks to your Moscow airfare deal, you'll be setting off to discover an astonishing city in which architecture is conceived as a demonstration of strength. The Kremlin, which dominates the famous Red Square, perfectly illustrates the tsars' desire for power. The square also houses the tsars' tombs in an imposing and austere necropolis. The Moscow metro system is also an eye opening experience: many of its stations are sumptuously decorated with marble, chandeliers and beautiful paintings.
Moscow, capital of Russian refinement
The political and economic capital of Russia, Moscow is also a hub of exceptional Russian art. Book your flight to Moscow, and plunge deep into the incredible diversity of the collection at the Pushkin Museum, the largest museum in Russia, where several millennia of artistic creativity can be found, from ancient Egypt to the post-Impressionists. Fans of the performing arts will flock to the Bolshoi, the second largest theatre in the world. An international reference in the world of ballet since the 17th century, it also hosted the very first performance of Swan Lake in 1877.
Moscow, land of wild parties
A city of excess, the Russian capital is also excessive in its friendliness. All you need is a plane ticket to Moscow to join the party. By day and by night, young people gather in Krymsky Val Park to listen to music among the statues of great Soviet leaders. For a shopping spree, head to Arbat Street, a chic and bustling thoroughfare where you'll find several excellent places to try a ptichye moloko, a cake with custard cream and meringue layers and a chocolate glaze. Book your tickets to Moscow and you'll be ready to see Russian history written before your eyes, from ancient heritage to constant reinvention.

The Moscow International Film Festival, or MIFF, is the Russian capital's biggest film festival, and it dates back to 1935. It's been a regular event since 1959, becoming an annual event in 1995.
The main award at this festival is the Golden St George, a statue of St George slaying the dragon. Some of the actors who have received awards from this festival include Jack Nicholson, Jeanne Moreau, Meryl Streep, Harvey Keitel, Fanny Ardant, Daniel Olbrychski and Gérard Depardieu. Every year, the highly sought after prize is awarded to a director, though not necessarily a Russian, as the competition is open to directors from anywhere in the world.

Bordered by the Kremlin, St Basil's Cathedral, the History Museum and Lenin's mausoleum, the Red Square (whose name literally means "beautiful square") is the city's emblematic centre.
Red Square was built after a fire in 1493 which ravaged the wooden houses on this spot.
The houses were not rebuilt and the open space that remained was to become an important commercial and social hub. These days, as well as welcoming the throngs of tourists, Moscow's Red Square hosts many popular and military events throughout the year.

Standing at the top of the Borovitsky hill, the Kremlin constitutes the historic centre of Moscow, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Surrounded by huge ramparts that have been rebuilt several times, the Kremlin was historically the residence of the tsars, the soviet rulers, and today it is inhabited by the president of the country.

Overlooking Red Square Rouge, the Kremlin houses numerous buildings within its walls which themselves are punctuated by 19 towers. Inside the Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Archangel Saint-Michel, the Church of the Twelve Apostles, the Grand Kremlin Palace and the Senate.

Café Pushkin opened in 1999 in celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of the Russian poet Pushkin.
This prestigious café is a tribute to Russian food and to the 18th century in its atmosphere. With its wood panelling and antique art, it offers a peek into Russia's prestigious, intellectual past.

Like Russian dolls, the rooms open into other, even more exquisite rooms, and the higher you climb in the restaurant, the more sophisticated the culinary creations. And as an added bonus, you can pop in any time of day or night to eat or drink... should you feel the need of some (excellent) borscht at 4am!

Mayak Restaurant in Moscow is what the Café de Flore is to Paris, the intellectuals' gathering place. In a setting which no doubt would have appealed to late 18th century writers, with its wooden tables and its piano, Mayak Restaurant offers a menu of succulent and traditional Russian dishes. Like any good intellectuals' bar, you can also just come here in the middle of the night for a drink. Add a few scandals and sensual gazes and you could be in a Dostoyevsky novel.

The building which houses this restaurant was a popular tavern in the 19th century, before being turned into a French cafe. After the revolution, it was reopened as a restaurant called simply Uzbekistan. Following a full refurbishment, in which it was decorated in sumptuous style, it resembles an oriental palace. The restaurant showcases the rich, hearty dishes of Uzbekistan, and indeed many other cuisines from around the world feature on its extensive menu. There's a buffet of oriental pastries and fruit to follow. In the evening it's particularly festive: there's sometimes live music and dancing.<br/>
