Flight Osaka

A magical destination

Japan's third largest city is bursting with invigorating energy. You will succumb to its amazing vitality at the first minute.

The essential

Background of this impressive destination

On the big wheel installed at the top of the Hep Five building you can admire the bay and the port of Osaka. A large glass bubble hides the Maritime Museum. The Yodo River takes part in this magic, crossing the city between the skyscrapers made of glass and steel, like the two futuristic towers of the Umeda Sky Building, connected by an atrium bridge. A breathtaking architecture that convinces you that Osaka is a city of the future that deserves the trip.

Osaka, hyperbolic Japan
Eccentric and unexpected
Full of eccentric quirks, the third largest city in Japan is always animated. Book your flight to Osaka, Tokyo’s vivacious little sister, and get ready to discover a dynamic city with dozens of shopping malls, each more extravagant than the last. Wander towards the big red Ferris wheel which overlooks the HEP Five, an impressive shopping mall. Pass under the watchful eyes of the huge sculpted whales at the entrance and explore the nine floors of shopping and entertainment. A few minutes from here is Denden Town, a cosplay hotspot where manga and video game fans gather. And don’t miss the frenetic energy of Dotonbori street, with its multitude of adverts and screens.
Epicurean and delicious
Bubbling with energy, famous for kuidaore (meaning "to eat oneself to bankruptcy"), this megacity is also the capital of Japanese epicureanism. Booked your airfare to Osaka? Prepare to discover internationally renowned restaurants like the very chic Fujiya 1935 or the Mizuno, for unparalleled okonomiyaki, the traditional savoury pancake with vegetables and meat. Once you’ve eaten your fill, sample the region’s other speciality: shows. At the National Bunraku Theatre, actors share the stage with giant puppets, a real Japanese tradition. Not far from here, the famous Namba Grand Kagetsu offers a programme of comedy shows including rakugo (a kind of stand up) and manzai (a double act) which amuse both locals and visitors.
Playful and full of attractions
In Japan’s cultural capital, everything is about fun and leisure activities, all on a massive scale. Thanks to your great deal round trip flights to Osaka you can pay a visit to the Spa World, a four storey relaxing Japanese experience with traditional baths, a great antidote to the pace of modern life. Some 10 million film fans flock to Universal Studios Japan every year, the film studio’s theme park where you’ll find a mix of blockbusters and Japanese films. You’ll be amazed at Kaiyukan Aquarium, one of the world’s largest aquariums, where you see two rare whale sharks. With your plane ticket booked to Osaka, you are in for a delightful mix of Japanese culture and entertainment.

Description

Rice forms the basis of Japanese agriculture: it's a subsistence crop for most farmers. Each year the Otaue Rice Planting Festival takes place in June, with age old rituals performed, songs, dances and blessings, and rice seedlings are planted in the watery paddy fields.
It's a beautiful sight as the Shinto monks walk through the rice fields of the Sumiyoshi sanctuary. Locals and tourists gather to watch the planting and the other events, including processions of samurai and geisha, and traditional song and dance performances.

Description

This festival sees a small temple which lies unoccupied all year long suddenly teeming with life. During the Daigaku Festival, the Ikune shrine is the focal point for a grand celebration whose origins date back many years. The daigaku is an impressive structure, with 79 lanterns hanging from it, originally constructed to celebrate a successful prayer for rain. Each shine would originally have had its own daigaku, but the Ikune Shrine is the only one in Osaka which still has one. The festival is therefore of great historical importance, and it attracts such a large crowd each year. There's a lively atmosphere, parades and plenty of street food to enjoy over these two days of celebrations in Osaka.

The Osaka calendar is full of celebrations, and yet there aren't many as important as the Tenjin Matsuri, a festival which echoes throughout the country. Among all the summer matsuris (festivals) Osaka's is the biggest and best known, the most impressive and unparalleled.
For two whole days, the festival takes over the entire city, with festive parades, traditional costumes, music and drummers and fabulous floats. The highlight of the festival is the river parade on the second day, with decorated boats, which is followed by a fireworks display over the river.

In Japan, ancient temples and shrines still occupy an important place within daily life. There are numerous days on the calendar on which the temples are honoured with festivals featuring elaborate costumes, floats and religious parades. Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka is no exception: this shrine becomes a focal point for a three day festival in the middle of summer. This unusual event features a parade of miniature altars and also a tug-of-war between participants in period costume from the Muromachi era. There's always a large crowd of people who come to watch and to follow the parade to Sakai City.

Hiding among the skyscrapers of Osaka is one of Japan's oldest and most venerable buildings. The Shitenno-ji Temple was first built almost 1500 years ago, and has been reconstructed several times over the centuries. Step into the temple complex and you will enter a haven of tranquillity, an island of calm amid the frantic bustle of the city.
Behind the pretty red façade, you will find statues which honour the Buddhist pantheon, as well as frescos that tell the story of Buddha's life. Contemporary and ancient art come together in harmony.
Take a moment to explore the gardens, where tortoises wander under the cherry trees.

According to the chef, the dishes served at Hajime are an incarnation of "the equilibrium and harmony between nature, land and space". Thus, for Hajime Yoneda, food is above all a spiritual experience. Priority is given to vegetables, herbs and grains.
This philosophy also results in a considerable attention to detail: each ingredient is selected and placed on the plate with careful regard for its shape and colour, so that each dish is presented like the unveiling of a painting.
