3 days in Lifou
The island with many faces
With an area of 1150 square kilometres, as big as Martinique, Lifou is the largest and most populous of the Loyalty Islands. Impressive caves, deserted beaches, sheer cliffs…
Day 1
Discovering Local Flavours
Market at Wé
After you have enjoyed your stay in Nouméa, courtesy of our special New Caledonia deals, head for Wé, the island’s administrative centre. You will find numerous tourist lodgings here, including the Drehu Village Hotel. On Wednesday and Friday mornings, you can enjoy the ambiance of the small market in the village centre, and have your first glimpse of the charming lifestyle on this island. You will hear people speaking both French and Drehu, a songlike language still widely used by the local people.
Your pleasant gastronomic break
Every midday, the restaurant Fetra Sun, close to the centre of Wé, offers delicious dishes prepared from local products. These include wild deer and boar, fresh fish and seafood; something for everyone’s tastes and budget.
Day 2
To the entrails of the Island
Relaxation on the Santal Bay
In the middle of Santal Bay, on Lifou’s west coast, the lovely Easo Beach awaits your towels and swimming costumes. No doubt you will come across turtles, wandering in to have a swim on the coast.
Hiking tours for all levels
A pathway leads from Easo Beach to the tiny Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, which offers a marvellous view of Santal Bay, as well as its neighbour to the north, Jinek Bay. More adventurous types can travel to the north of the island to explore the Grotte du Diable (Devil’s Cave), in the Tingeting tribal lands near Kumo.
Day 3
Trip to the South of Lifou
Visit "les joyaux de Luengöni"
For those who prefer to stay in the south of the island, it is possible, with an advance booking, to visit Les Joyaux de Luengöni, where you can admire its cave and waterhole. Luengöni also has, without doubt, the most beautiful beach on the island.
Vanilla, Lifou's Brown Gold
It is impossible to come to Lifou and miss encountering the island’s most famous fruit: the vanilla. Production of this particular type of orchid has taken off in recent years and its reputation has travelled far beyond Drehu’s borders. The vanilla crème brûlée served in Noumea’s restaurants is just one example of the popularity of this tasty pod.
