Flight Noumea

Noumea, an object of desire

New Caledonia’s capital is a vibrant and lively city. Overlooking the lagoon and butting up against a hill side, it offers a plethora of activities, man-made enticements, shopping venues and cultural outings. Nouméa is resolutely strong-tempered, and it masterfully beats the pulse of cosmopolitanism.

The essential

Small yet powerful, New Caledonia’s capital concentrates an exciting array of things to do, foods to taste, places to go and sites to visit. Several museums, scattered across the city, will undoubtedly stimulate your curiosity and help you better understand the historical past of New Caledonia. Town Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Museum of World War II or the Museum of New Caledonia: just take your pick or visit them all! For a more nature-oriented outing, see the Zoological and Forest Park located further north. Elegantly perched on a hill, the Park hosts an amazing diversity of endemic species. As you walk through gorgeous scenery, you will discover splendid fauna and flora. Kids and adults alike will assuredly have a great time. Cradled between Nouméa’s famous bays, the Aquarium des Lagons is a must-see. Discover the country’s underwater treasures to the sound of visitors oohing and ahhing over a scorpion fish or fluorescent corals. If you want to be part of the Caledonian paradisiac dream, don’t wait any longer to book your flight to Noumea.

In the heart of the Pacific Ocean, Nouméa, formerly known as Port-de-France, is a land shaped by different cultures. The city’s history is revealed through its cultural heritage. The district of Faubourg Blanchot, the old French quarter, bears witness to this. Hop onto one of the tourist trains which tour the area and travel back in time, discovering the elegant colonial buildings dating from the 1930s. Along the way, stop off at the Château Hagen, designed by Jean Taragnat, one of the first French settlers. This historic monument also houses a cultural space where exhibitions and events highlight Nouméa’s multicultural identity. By booking a plane ticket to Nouméa, you’ll be setting off on a journey to a land of traditions. In the north of the city, between Tina Bay and Magenta Bay, lies the Tjibaou Cultural Centre. This steel giant, whose architecture was inspired by traditional village huts, highlights Kanak culture, as well as Caledonian rites and customs.

While the Francofolies festival has already conquered several French-speaking countries, this is only the third time the festival comes to New Caledonia. Much like the other Francofolies festivals around the world, this one brings some great surprises to the stage, such as Eddy de Pretto, Amadou & Mariam, Boulevard des Airs, the rapper Dadju or the beautiful Camelia Jordana.
All in the fabulous setting of the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, in Magenta Bay, designed by Renzo Piano. The centre is in perfect harmony with the environment, it's the perfect spot to hear some great music!
The Groupama Race Is without a doubt the most ambitious and important sporting event on New Caledonian waters, which are of course used to seeing their share of races. The best sailors around (from New Caledonia but also from New Zealand, Australia, La Reunion and further afield) will complete a whole loop around New Caledonia, taking them between three and six days. Skill, determination and nerves of steel are necessary to go the distance in this race. The event attracts numerous spectators each year who follow the race from the island, cheering on the competitors as they battle it out on the water.
Who will take over the title from Miss Scarlet, who won in 2018 in three days and 52 minutes?

As if placed at the surface of the water, the rocks in Upi Bay are a rather unusual sight. They seem to float in the translucent water despite their imposing mass.

The New Caledonian capital is proud of its Kanak roots, and wanted to open a museum in honour of Kanak culture. And thus, the Tjibaou Cultural Centre was built. It officially opened in 1998, and welcomes close to 100,000 visitors per year.
The building was designed by Renzo Piano, and its architecture refers to traditional Kanak huts and shows off the beauty of iroko wood.
Inside, almost 7,000m² of exhibition space highlight the region's archaeological and artistic heritage. The centre is not to be missed for its unique insight into kanak art and history.

The guardian of the capital, the Amédée Lighthouse keeps watch from its vantage point on Amédée Island. It stands 56m tall, and was designed and built in Paris, before being sent to New Caledonia to prevent the then frequent shipwrecks at the entrance to the lagoons.
The lighthouse is open to visitors and tourists who can climb the 247 steps of its cast iron staircase to the top. The magnificent view over the azure waters is worth the effort.
An excursion that enables you to appreciate the beauty of the New Caledonian landscape.
